Descendant Drop-In: The Genealogy Help Program, the new genealogy program from the Crown Point Community Library Indiana Room, is here to help with your genealogy questions and stumpers.  Stop by the Indiana Room the second Monday of every month from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm for assistance.  This is intended for quick questions and help; if you require additional services you may be asked to make an appointment.

Library Busy As Adult Literacy Center Opens

On Monday, January 23 The James C. Conlon Community Literacy Center (CCLC) opened at 9:30 a.m. and the Center’s first student arrived at 9:35 a.m.  It was a busy day as both the Crown Point Adult Learning Center’s High School Equivalency (HSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs conducted classes.

The Library has partnered with the Crown Point Adult Learning center to provide a location for students that are seeking their HSE and learning English as a second language. The creation of the new location for the center was made possible by winning a grant from the Crown Point Community Foundation’s Big Idea grant project last summer.

The purpose of the CCLC is to provide life-changing programs for patrons needing help in developing their personal literacy skills.  The room currently will be used by the Crown Point Adult Learning Center, but other literacy organizations will also be encouraged to use the room.

The CCLC is a direct extension of the Crown Point Community Library’s Mission Statement, “The Crown Point Community Library is a community center for lifelong discovery.”

The library re-purposed the Periodical Room for the James C. Conlon Community Literacy Center and utilized existing space on the 1^st floor to create new seating areas for patrons, relocate collections and provide much needed space for specific collections for future growth.

The Big Idea grant also included other outreach initiatives. These initiatives are moving from the planning stages and are beginning to be implemented in ways that are more visible to all library staff and patrons.  Here’s an overview of the new outreach initiatives:

• Outreach to Literacy Organizations: The Crown Point Community Library partnered with the Friends of the Adult Learning Center to provide dedicated space for the Adult Learning Program.
• Outreach to the Community and Underserved Populations-Mobile Library: The grant also provided funding for a utility van to enhance outreach library services for the Crown Point and Winfield locations. Another facet of the outreach service is to provide “Books in a Box” for day cares, senior centers and other facilities, making books and library resources available to all. As the outreach services continue to roll out, keep an eye out for the Library’s new van…it will be hard to miss!

Crown Point Community Library Celebrates Indiana’s Bicentennial

It’s Indiana’s Bicentennial! 200 Fun Facts about Crown Point to Celebrate is a display honoring the 200th birthday of the state of Indiana. The Crown Point Community Library Indiana Room and Reference Department created a display featuring fun facts about Crown Point that will be exhibited in the lobby of the Crown Point Community Library throughout November, December, and January. The display has been generously underwritten by the Friends of the Library and it has been officially endorsed by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission as a Legacy Project. Come learn about the Hub City and see some unique items that represent our city.

For instance, did you know there was Elk Diving at the Lake County Fair?  Check out the display to learn more…

 
After looking at the display in the lobby, visit the Indiana Room on the second floor. There is another display with Indiana state facts and trivia celebrating the Bicentennial.  December 11, 2016, is the official birthday of The Hoosier State.  How will you celebrate?

The Winfield Branch is now open.

Phones are working, internet access is available, and materials are available for check out.

Our hours are:

Monday & Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday: Closed

Calling All Crown Pointers!

The Indiana Room is seeking donations or loans for an upcoming display in the library lobby. To help celebrate Indiana’s 200th birthday, the Crown Point Community Library Indiana Room will be exhibiting a look at Crown Point history – the places, people, and things that make our city and state great. The Indiana Room is
interested in photographs of old buildings or activities and events around Crown Point; artifacts and advertisements from former (or current, but older) Crown Point businesses or events; or something similar that represents the Hub City. If you would be willing to share your items for the display, please contact the Indiana Room Jeanene at (219) 306-4593 or email genealogy@crownpointlibrary.org. All items will be kept in a locked case and will be returned.

Submissions are due by October 15.

Winfield Branch Closing September 24!

The days are getting closer to the new branch opening its doors to the community. Library staff are busy facilitating the move and preparing the new location to welcome you!

The Winfield Branch will close at end of business on Saturday, September 24.

Library movers will arrive to start boxing the collection, breaking down shelving and furniture delivery, staff training and other functions will all occur from September 25 through October 8. The new branch location is scheduled to open on Tuesday, October 11. Grand opening and ribbon cutting activities will be announced in October.

To help along the process, patrons will only have access to the DVDs and CDs located at the Crown Point Library until the Winfield Branch reopens.

HELP US MOVE!

We are encouraging our patrons to check out enough reading material to last while we are closed. Fines will not be charged for materials that are due during the library closure. Due dates for all materials checked out from the Winfield Branch will be adjusted to be due after we open in the new location.
